Description

The Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society is named for Dr. Edward Alexander Bouchet (1852-1918, pictured above), the first Black American to earn a Ph.D. degree in the United States (Physics, Yale University, 1876). It recognizes doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, alumni, and others who embody the values of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy by which Bouchet lived and worked as a scholar, educator, and physicist.

  • Bouchet Society membership is by application or nomination only.
  • Membership is decided by its National Steering committee.
  • Doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars can apply for membership.
  • A third party must nominate faculty and alumni for membership.
Eligibility & Requirements
  • All candidates must show exceptional achievement in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences.
  • All candidates must show an outstanding record of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy.
  • Doctoral student candidates must be in academic good standing.
  • Postdoctoral candidates must have earned their Ph.D. degrees within the last six years.
  • Faculty and alumni candidates must be nominated by a third party.
